World Winter Master Games 2020 – Innsbruck Austria

From 10 until 19 January 2020 the World Winter Master Games 2020 (WWMG2020) https://www.innsbruck2020.com/en/innsbruck-2020 were held in Innsbruck Austria. More then 3000 athletes were active in 12 winter sports, amongst these speedskating. Almost 250 masters participated in three days in six distances. On the first day, Thursday 16 January the 500 m and 3000 m were on the program. On Friday 16 January the 1500 and 5000 m were skated and on Saturday 19 January the 1000 and 10.000 meters. A lot of masters skated during these three days 3 or even 4 distances.

The speedskating event was very good organised by the jury team of the Austrian Skating association in Innsbruck. During the first two days the weather was extremely beautiful. On Saturday the weather was changed into light snowfall in the morning and wet snow and light rain in the afternoon.

The event was fantastic and all competitors were very enthusiastic and performed very good. The results of all skaters can be found on this webpage https://www.innsbruck2020.com/de/start-ergebnislisten and a lot of pictures of all sport can be found on https://www.innsbruck2020.com/de/news/fotos.

Very much masters skated very well on the different distances. A large number of unofficial new outdoor master world records were skated. Hans de Vries, the Dutch professor in speedskating statistics supported the jury to make all comparisons.

A superb performance was skated by Eva Riemersma (L35+) on the 10 K on Saturday. She pulverised under difficult ice and weather conditions the 10 K international masters world record of Sandra van Bijlert (18:24,27 min skated on 15-03-2016 in Heerenveen). The unofficial new masters world record on the 10 K L35+ is now 17:43,00 minutes skated on the outdoor rink of Olympiaworld Innsbruck, fantastic!

Furthermore a nice interview with Marianne de Neeling-Lans (L60+) can be found on https://www.innsbruck2020.com/en/news/short-stories/like-daughter-like-mother

WWMG2020 was a true example of top performance of masters in winter sports, not only in speedskating but in all other winter sports! Congratulations for the whole organizing team of WWMG2020!

Erfurt in December is the perfect place for a pre-Christmas speed skating event: The big Christmas market with Glühwein and Gemütlichkeit in a superb medieval setting. And also a speed skating event  in the warm Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemannn-Halle on  superbly prepared ice, run efficiently and smoothly by experienced organisers.
There were 54 participants from Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Switzerland. Even  if this was the first competition of  the season for many of the skaters, 11 personal records were set as well as 5 Masters’ records.

Gerdien Meijer and Kees Verdouw winners DMC2019-2020

After the final of the Dutch Masters Cup 2019-2020, Gerdien Meijer (L55) and Kees Verdouw (M75) were allowed to take home the cup and accompanying the prizes from sponsor Alpenliebe Design Hotel in Inzell.

Awesome final with five IMSSC world records!

What a turnout this final evening in Leeuwarden. No less than 87 skaters were at the start, not only from The Netherlands, but also from Norway, Germany, Great Britain and Belgium.

Just like the first DMC of this season in Thialf, also this evening many world records were broken. Gerdien Meijer was the first of the evening to break a world record. With her 500m time of 43.44 she managed to get rid of her own WR at the L55 of 43.51. WR number 2 also came from Gerdien: during the 1000m with a beautiful time of 1.25.64 she broke the record of 1.26.58 in the name of the Russian Filimonova with almost a second!

Then it was Thea Kroontje who pulverized the WR at the L75! With 5.31.82, she took almost a minute and a half off the record that had been in the name of the Russian Berezina since 2016 (6.54.33). Kees Verdouw skated in the same age class but with the men a new world record. He set the record with 5.03.01 since 2014 in the name of Toon Kooijmans at a new splendid time of 4.59.77.
That the 5km only took place after eleven in the evening did not bother Eva Riemersma at all. Still motivated, she was at the start to attack the world record in the L35. And it worked! With 8.15.88 she crossed the record with 8.22.84 until this evening in the name of Suzanne Mulder. Congratulations all with these beautiful world records!

Results final DMC

With her 1000m Gerdien managed to reach 101.10% of the WR. This earned her a third place and therefore 70 points, which in this final were doubled by 1.5 to a score of 105. In addition to the 2 × 75 points for her world records, she came to 255 points and therefore she won the DMCIII. Despite the fact that Thea Kroontje with 124.87% took the 150 points win this evening, she was 2nd overall this evening, because with 75 bonus points for her world record, she thus "only" came to 225 points. Eva Riemersma came in second place of the DMCIII with 101.40% of the WR, which earned her 120 points, and added the 75 bonus points for the world record, she came in third place of the evening with 195 points.

With the men it was Kees Verdouw who took the win for the third time this season. With his world record at the 3km he came to 101.08% of the WR, so that he achieved the 150 points for the win, plus the 75 bonus points. This earned him 225 points and thus the win of the final DMC.

With his 1500m time of 1.56.47, Arjan Elferink came in the M45 to 98.70% of the world record of 1.54.96. This earned Arjan 120 points for the 2nd place. And finally Wibe Veenbaas also managed to win the points with his 1500m time. With 2.17.55 he achieved 98.36% of the WR on the M70. 105 points for Wibe this evening.

The winners of the DMC2019-2020
Over the three DMC’s (30 November Heerenveen, 8 December Enschede and 21 December Leeuwarden) the winners are as follows:

LADIES

  1. Gerdien Meijer (L55): 565 points
  2. Thea Kroontje (L75): 475 points
  3. Eva Riemersma (L35): 272 points
  4. Mijke Anne Kanneworff (L35): 205 points
  5. Christine Seemann (L45): 190 points

MEN

  1. Kees Verdouw (M75): 575 points
  2. Wibe Veenbaas (M70): 235 points
  3. Bart Seffinga (M35): 225 points
  4. Sandro Cara (M45): 142 points
  5. Arjan Elferink (M45): 120 points

The best three among both the ladies and the men were not only allowed to take the cup home, but also received the corresponding prizes from our main sponsor Alpenliebe Design Hotel from Inzell from referees Dina Melis and Erik Kuiper.

Very successful DMC2019-2020

With a record number of participants, more and more foreign skaters and no less than 11 world records this edition, the DMC is indispensable and has become the favorite preparation competitions among a lot of master skaters! With reactions such as "Once again a beautiful tournament with great winners" and "Congratulations folks, they were beautiful competitions with beautiful records! It's great that these kinds of competitions are there for the masters with so much fun and togetherness. ”, We can rightly call the DMC a successful championship! Thank you for your enthusiasm, masters. Certainly see you again next season!

SURPRISES DURING DMC2 IN ENSCHEDE

What a beautiful evening during the second Dutch Masters Cup, which took place on Sunday evening December 8 in Enschede. The evening yielded some surprises with a shift in the rankings as a result!

First place and track record for Christine Seemann

Last week’s winner Ladies Thea Kroontje unfortunately injured her groin during warm up skating, which forced her to stop her 500m and to withdraw for the 1500m. As a result, Kroontje unfortunately missed out on important points, especially when you consider that - as should be possible - she could once again set a world record this evening.
Now it was up to the German Christine Seemann to go home with the first place of this DMC ánd with a new track record on the 5000 meter! She skated 8.18.81 and with this, she was not even a second above the world record in her L45 age group, which is in the name of Jolanda Voskamp on 8.17.96. With this she approached the world record with 99.83% and thus achieved the 100 points for the first place of DMC2.
Gerdien Meijer (L55) came with her 500m in 43.85, to 99.22% of her own, last week in Thialf skated, world record of 43.51. This earned her a 2nd place and 80 points. Mijke Anne Kanneworff achieved the 70 points for 3rd place with her 500m. She skated a beautiful 42.37. However, the world record in the L35 that since last year World Sprint Championships in Leeuwarden is on her own name, with 41.29, is particularly sharp. Although the fastest time of the evening with the ladies, she had to settle for a third place with an approach of 97.45%.

Gerdien Meijer takes the lead

Because of the missed points this evening for Thea Kroontje, Gerdien Meijer now takes the lead of the standings with 310 points. Thea is still in second place with 250 points, so if she recovers well, she can make it quite difficult for Gerdien December 21 at the DMC final in Leeuwarden! In third place in the ranking, Mijke Anne Kanneworff follows with 130 points. Christine Seemann (100 points) and Marianne de Neeling (95 points) follow in fourth and fifth place. Hopefully Christine will come back on 21 December to compete again and gets more points!

Kees Verdouw again the strongest with the men

Just like last week, Kees Verdouw won the evening with the men again. No world records this time, unfortunately, although that was actually the setup of his 5km. Although Kees set a great time of 8.48.63, the record in his age class M75, which is in the name of the Norwegian Arne Kjell Foldvik with 8.42.67, was taken too high on the track of Enschede. With an approach of 98.87% of the world record, still good for the first place of DMCII!.
Bart Seffinga achieved second place this evening. With his 500m in 38.56 he was at 96.45% of the world record of 37.19 at the M35 and thus achieved 80 points. Wibe Veenbaas (M70) took third place of the evening due to his 1500m and therefore he won 70 points. With 2.20.90 he reached 96.03% of the world record which is 2.15.30.

Kees Verdouw has an even stronger lead

With this first place again, Kees Verdouw has considerably strengthened his leadership. With not less than 350 points, he leads the men's list. Last week's number two, Victor van den Hoff, failed this DMC because of his participation in the Masters Criterion in Erfurt that took place at the same time unfortunately, so he also missed important points. As a result, he dropped to fifth place in the rankings, can he make up for it in two weeks and come back in the top three.
Bart Seffinga is now following on the second place with 150 points, closely followed by Wibe Veenbaas with 130 points, who has now entered the top 3. Sandro Cara is in front of Victor van den Hoff with 100 points in fourth place in the ranking. Victor has 80 points.

Final DMC on December 21 in Leeuwarden

The final of this season's Dutch Masters Cup will take place on Saturday December 21 in Leeuwarden. During this closing competition, the points count double, so anything can happen in the final of the DMC. Are records going to be broken again? Thea, Gerdien, Kees, but also Victor and Wibe could just grab the bonus points for a world record. Who takes the DMC trophy the main prizes sponsored by Alpenliebe Design Hotel home? It will be exciting, so make sure you are there!

See you hopefully on 21 December in Leeuwarden!

Six new world records at the first Dutch Masters Cup

Not less than six IMSSC masters world records were improved during the first Dutch Masters Cup of this season! A total of 118 masters have started and 169 SBs and 18 PBs were improved. Two masters from Belgium, two from Germany and the rest from the Netherlands were there.

Thea Kroontje proudly in the lead

In her L75 category, Thea Kroontje crushed the records in the 500 and 1000 meters, both since 2012 in the name of the Russian Tatyana Sidorova, with 6 and 13 seconds respectively! She set the world record at the 500m this evening from 59.59 to a beautiful new record of 53.85 in this age class. In the 1000m she set the record from 2.00.13 to 1.47.33, bringing her to no less than 111.93% of the world record. With 100 points for the win and twice 75 bonus points for the world records, she leads the women's ranking with 250 points.

Gerdien Meijer also skated two world records this evening. In her L55 category she first broke the 500m record, which since 2017 was in the name of Monique Boerema, from 44.53 to 43.51. And at the 1500m she broke the record of the Russian Lyudmila Filimonova narrowly: from 2.14.70 to 2.14.68. For her 500m time this meant that she approached the existing world record with 102.34%, which earned her - together with the 150 bonus points for the skated world records - a second place (230 points) in the intermediate classification.

Monique Boerema, winner of the DMC 2017-2018 and number three in the classification last season, follows as number three. With her 45.84 on the 500m at the L55 she reached 97.14% of her own (until tonight) current world record of 44.53. With this she takes the first 60 points of this season and she is third in the intermediate classification for the ladies.

Kees Verdouw leads the men's classification

Two men's world records were also broken, both by Kees Verdouw in the M75 category. First he set the record of 47.37 (driven in 2007 in Calgary) in the name of Jaap Bitter († 2019) to a new time of 47.35. After that he set the record of Toon Kooijmans from 2013 (2.24.82) to a new time of 2.22.54 at the 1500m. With his 1500m he came to 101.60% of the world record, which earned him the 100 points daily win. Together with the 150 bonus points for the world records, he is therefore firmly in the lead with 250 points among the men.

With 99.03%, Victor van den Hoff in the 1000m came close to the world record in his M65 category. With his time of 1.23.63, the time of 1.22.82 from Calgary by Jan van der Meulen is not that far out of sight. In any case, it earned Victor a second place in the intermediate classification. The first eighty points have arrived.

Bart Seffinga is in third place among the men. With his 500m time he reached 97.89% of the world record for the M35 masters. With 37.19 this record has been in the name of Harry Pardijs since 2013. Bart came to a great time of 37.99. This earned him the sixty points for third place.

Event organizers and managers can benefit from IMSSC's online registration system. IMSSC members as well as authorized users have access to such system, which allows to create races and venues, with all relevant information to register. A published event can then collect registration details from skaters, and even their payments if necessary. From season 2019-2020, there are quite a few improvements over the old system: organizers are kindly requested to have a look at the attached document, and encouraged to create and/or test events before October 1st
