{"id":12364,"date":"2018-06-24T20:18:05","date_gmt":"2018-06-24T19:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revva.net\/?p=12364"},"modified":"2024-01-12T17:54:22","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T17:54:22","slug":"how-analytics-boost-travel-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imssc.org\/biflix\/how-analytics-boost-travel-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"How Analytics Boost Travel Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"6kc00-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6kc00-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-0-0\">I had the pleasure and honor to work alongside <strong>Mr. Ioannis Hatziliamis<\/strong>, the legendary founder of Rodos Tours, one of the oldest DMCs of Colossus\u2019s Island<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-2-0\">Five minutes conversations with him had more value than a whole academic course!<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-4-0\">His was one of the better organized and managed incoming operators I have ever seen, and I owe him much if what I learnt about this trade<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-5-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-6-0\">But, in spite of having his own large bus fleet, Mr Hatzilliamis had always the same problem during the high season months: vehicle and tour guide availability<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-7-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-8-0\">Which translated in long delays at the airport for arriving passengers, or cancelled tours<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-9-0\">.<br \/><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-10-0\">About five years later, in the early 2000\u2019s, I was fortunate to work in Crete with Ibis el Greco. It was a DMC owned by another incoming luminary, <strong>Mr Yves Maebe<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-11-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-12-0\">And, sure enough, we were experiencing the same bus and guide problem as mentioned above, only worsened by traffic jams<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6kc00-13-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"5kj24-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5kj24-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5kj24-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-0-0\">Now, I don\u2019t know if Mr. Hatziliamis or Mr. Maebe could sub-contract vehicles back then, or if they solved the problem at last. But for all their cleverness, experience and professionalism, they needed an indispensable aid to duck or reduce their profit losses: <strong>analytics<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-1-0\">. Not the tools, mind, as spreadsheets were available even on my Commodore 64 in the mid-eighties. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-2-0\">No, what was missing back then was a <strong>mindset<\/strong> that would appreciate the importance of analyzing data. No other way to solve <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-3-0\">seemingly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-4-0\"> unsurmountable business problems<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-5-0\">. Who can blame those pioneers, anyway? There was enough trouble on a daily basis to even start thinking about collecting data\u2026 <\/span><\/div>\n<h4 data-offset-key=\"cb5b5-0-0\">This is not the 90&#8217;s anymore<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"f2h18-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f2h18-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-0-0\">Fast forward to 2018, and I still see exactly the same bus and tour guide issues, in many resorts. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-1-0\">Yes, the culprit is always the same: a lack of a data-driven mindset, owing to an almost exclusive focus on day-to-day tasks<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-2-0\">. I can relate to that: why fix things that are already working? Why waste time on something that might or might not bring benefits to the company? It&#8217;s understandable, human nature at its best (and worst). <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-3-0\">But I bet that very nature makes you check your competitors\u2019 rates twice a day, or ask around how many tours they sold, how many buses they had at the airport yesterday and the day before\u2026 Valuable information, of course, but not as much as your own,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"adverb\">internally<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-5-0\"><strong> generated<\/strong> set of data<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f2h18-6-0\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"9bgpi-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9bgpi-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9bgpi-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"86mc9-0-0\">\n<blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\" data-offset-key=\"86mc9-0-0\"><strong><span class=\"veryhardreadability\">So here\u2019s the first reason why you need BI: To predict business needs, to forecast arrivals, to estimate upcoming profits and costs\u2026 In short, to foresee the company\u2019s (and market) future<\/span>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"6ikul-0-0\">\n<h4 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6ikul-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6ikul-0-0\">The WHAT<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"9ji47-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9ji47-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"64q6j-0-0\">This, and this reason alone, should be more than enough to embrace Business Intelligence right now. The answer to the question \u201cWhat?\u201d, more <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"64q6j-1-0\">precisely<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"64q6j-2-0\"> \u201cWhat will happen?\u201d (<strong>predictive analytics<\/strong>), is paramount for any organization.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"41rrr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"41rrr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-0-0\">Still, owners and managers are way too obsessed by the \u201cWhat happened?\u201d question. That\u2019s why they are <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-1-0\">constantly<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-2-0\"> reviewing their (<\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-3-0\">mostly<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-4-0\"> financial) static reports. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-5-0\">Yes, it is important to check current and past data to confirm if what <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-6-0\">was planned<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-7-0\"> or forecasted actually materialized<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-8-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-9-0\">However<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"44ojt-10-0\">, it\u2019s crucial to use past (and future) data to prepare for what\u2019s next, to optimize resources, to plan ahead. I shouldn\u2019t be telling you this, right? How come you\u2019re still relying so much on balance sheets and sales reports, then?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"64oot-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"64oot-0-0\">\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"64oot-0-0\">Do yourself a favor and read a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imssc.org\/biflix\/how-to-set-up-a-data-driven-culture-in-hotels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-offset-key=\"64oot-1-0\">short article about adopting a data-driven culture &gt;&gt;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"efrqs-0-0\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The WHY<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"efrqs-0-0\">\n<div data-offset-key=\"efrqs-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-0-0\">By looking at a sales report, you might notice a significant booking decrease from a certain client, but you\u2019ll never be able to tell exactly why that happened, unless you can count your clients with the fingers on one hand<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-1-0\">. Either you ask the subject what&#8217;s going on, or you\u2019ll have to dig inside your data. See where I\u2019m going? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-2-0\">Once you know what happened and why, you\u2019ll be better positioned to take <strong>informed decisions<\/strong>, instead of going ahead with the usual hunches<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-3-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-4-0\">Sure, educated guesses served you well so far\u2026 but do you <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-5-0\">truly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-6-0\"> expect them to outrank competitors that are using data power to crush you<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-7-0\">? <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-8-0\">You know very well that in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-9-0\">this day and age<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-10-0\"> everybody is selling the same stuff to everybody else, and price cannot be the differentiator (otherwise, everyone will be out of business in no time)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-11-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-12-0\">So, either you get <strong>competitive advantage<\/strong> (impossible without data processing), or you keep guessing all the way through your trial &amp; error dogmatic management<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"kv3c-13-0\">. In the second scenario, though, you might as well forget about growth.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"cccmo-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cccmo-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cccmo-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"qi11-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"qi11-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-0-0\">Assuming you went the data way, by knowing the \u201cwhat\u201d and \u201cwhy\u201d you\u2019ll have -among other advantages- the opportunity to better <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-1-0\">allocate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-2-0\"> resources and place personnel where most needed, as well as improve operational aspects<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-3-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-4-0\">As a matter of fact, you\u2019ll be benefiting from <strong>prescriptive analytics<\/strong>, which would have been pure gold for my Greek friends back in the day, and helps in answering the next -most important- question<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"qi11-5-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"9k4ld-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9k4ld-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9k4ld-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"b4cti-0-0\">\n<h4 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b4cti-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b4cti-0-0\">The HOW<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"a43ub-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a43ub-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-0-0\">You shouldn\u2019t be performing clerical tasks. That\u2019s why you hired workers, right? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-1-0\">So why on Earth are you wasting their time and yours producing and perusing reports that are obsolete the moment they <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-2-0\">are created<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-3-0\">, then<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-4-0\">? I know scores of hotel, DMC and TO owners and managers who <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-5-0\">eagerly<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-6-0\"> await their daily\/weekly Excel reports. WTF? How can they decide on things to come by looking at columns and rows of numbers, at total figures? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-7-0\">That kind of data tells you only \u201cwhat happened\u201d (past), and I am sure it doesn\u2019t take rocket science (not even basic math) to let you infer that<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-8-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-9-0\">Nope, once you found out the \u201cwhats\u201d and \u201cwhys\u201d, your office time should <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-10-0\">be commited<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-11-0\"> to the devising of the \u201chows\u201d: that is, to plan and act towards operational perfection and maximal earnings<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5v7mh-12-0\">. In other words: focus on the important, ask the vital questions and put to use <strong>strategic analytics<\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"f5r0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f5r0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f5r0-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"chma8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"chma8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"chma8-0-0\">Can it <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"chma8-1-0\">be done by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"chma8-2-0\"> spreadsheeting the hell out of it? No, it can\u2019t. You can\u2019t deny it: the second option would help you take better (and faster) decisions. Even if you could do something like that on Excel, why would you do it? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-1-0\">Check the filters on the low right corner\u2026 Why waste a long time and effort to do something doable in two clicks, on any device<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-2-0\">? <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bhks6-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-3-0\"> There is no \u201cintelligence\u201d in BI if you <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-4-0\">employ<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-5-0\"> outdated methods to process and visualize data, and the tool problem <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-6-0\">was solved<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-7-0\"> long ago, with easy to use and affordable solutions for any kind (and size) of company<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-8-0\">. Like REVVA, just to throw a name.<br \/><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-9-0\">The real need is to translate data into insightful information, which in turn will bring a deeper understanding of the company\u2019s current situation, future standpoint, and possible strategic alternatives<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bhks6-10-0\">. <strong>But the real challenge is to kill rooted &#8220;analog&#8221; mindsets and act upon data insights<\/strong>. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"fqi4r-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fqi4r-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fqi4r-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"6qbhp-0-0\">\n<h4 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6qbhp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6qbhp-0-0\">Wrapping up<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"1unh0\" data-offset-key=\"2t0ri-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2t0ri-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-0-0\">You might be thinking \u201c<\/span><em>heck, we\u2019re a small company, we don\u2019t have that much bookings \/ we addressed a niche<\/em><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-0-2\">\u201d or something along those lines<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-2-0\">Congratulations, at least you\u2019re not a grumpy old fart that thinks data is tech crap (you wouldn\u2019t be reading this, if that was the case)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-3-0\">. But, with all due respect, allow me to point out that you are <strong>wrong<\/strong>. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-4-0\">I am willing to bet my second-best hat stating that at least one of your harder problems could <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-5-0\">be solved by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-6-0\"> data analysis<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4nh4b-7-0\">.
