Everybody assumes by now that\u2019s a fact: if you didn\u2019t so far, you\u2019d better ASAP. \u201c<\/span><em>It\u2019s the data-driven economy, stupid<\/em><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-1-2\">\u201d, Clinton would say. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-1-2\">Once the assumption has rooted in your mind, the first question usually is: <\/span><strong>How can I profit from my data?<\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-1-4\"> If you run a hotel, the answer is quite evident. Not so for tour operators, bedbanks and DMCs, for instance. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-2-0\">I published a text delving into the matter a few years back: although it <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-3-0\">was oriented<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-4-0\"> towards Big Data, it\u2019s valid for smaller datasets and still current<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-5-0\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biflix.tech\/how-can-tour-operators-profit-from-big-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-6-0\">Find it here &gt;&gt; <\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-8-0\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\"><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-9-0\">However<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-10-0\">, if you don\u2019t have the time or patience to read further, know that the answer to your enquiry is yet another question<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-11-0\">. Whatever your bigger problems are, <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-12-0\">surely<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-13-0\"> they\u2019re correlated to some IT system or another. Your best bet then, in most cases, would be to interrogate such system. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5 data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\">Know thy Guest<\/h5>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-14-0\">Here\u2019s an example: your best customers from certain market <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-15-0\">suddenly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-16-0\"> stop booking your rooms in a Balearic<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-17-0\">. Of course, data told you so, because you <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-18-0\">periodically<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-19-0\"> check sales reports. But do you check your booking engine <strong>searches<\/strong> data as well? <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-20-0\">There you might discover that those customers, for some reason, diverted their searches to other destinations<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-21-0\">. Now, <strong>here\u2019s how you convert data into money: through <\/strong><\/span><strong>action<\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-21-2\">. Knowing those facts and not acting upon them would be foolish, right? I suppose it\u2019s as foolish as not asking the very first question, but that\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-22-0\">just<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-23-0\"> me, never mind\u2026 <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-24-0\"> In the example above, once you know where your loyal customers diverted their searches, you\u2019d better ensure you have enough product there, not to mention competitive prices<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-25-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-27-0\">Consequently<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-28-0\">, a marketing campaign targeting said customers with what they are looking for, is a jiffy as \u201c<\/span><em>duh<\/em><\/span><em>!<\/em><span data-offset-key=\"8bkqr-29-1\">\u201d as possible.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"1bach-0-0\">\n<h5 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1bach-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1bach-0-0\">The 3 limitations of data profitability<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"5oet9-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5oet9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-0-0\">The next question will be: <strong>How and where should I start? <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-1-0\">Unless you\u2019re both proficient with statistical procedures and familiar with BI tools, I\u2019d say your best option is to outsource the matter<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-2-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-3-0\">Not long ago, this would have been prohibitive for small and medium companies, but technology is cheaper by the day, and there\u2019s no need for rocket (or even data) scientists anymore<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-4-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"5oet9-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5oet9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5oet9-4-0\">The range of combinations and permutations for the whole industry would be as broad as the infinite, so I cannot attempt to give a &#8220;good-for-all&#8221; suggestion to reply the question in object. Still, there are three main, common limitations, in spite of vertical or company size:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"671g5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"671g5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"671g5-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"ah9ma-0-0\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ah9ma-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ah9ma-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Systems<\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"ah9ma-0-2\">: you should have at least a booking engine, that allows to study not only reservations made (simple reporting can cover that), but s<em>earches done<\/em> as well<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ah9ma-1-0\">. The idea is to correlate both closed sales and searches with users.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"3krml-0-0\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3krml-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Dataset size<\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-0-2\">: you might have started your business recently and feel that you don\u2019t have data to play with, but even if your bookings are a handful every day, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-1-0\">eventually<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-2-0\"> you\u2019ll be amassing a considerable amount of information<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-3-0\">. It\u2019s not a bad idea to <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-4-0\">implement<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-5-0\"> data collection and processing from the beginning, it will be easier later on. <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-6-0\">Conversely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-7-0\">, if you already have large quantities of data, you may need Big Data infrastructure (can be pricey, but necessary)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3krml-8-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"egs45-0-0\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"egs45-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"egs45-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Staff<\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"egs45-0-2\">: up or down the chain of command, there will be people to whom data digestion will be difficult (if not impossible) <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"egs45-1-0\">initially<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"egs45-2-0\">, no matter how well designed your data consumption is<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"egs45-3-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"5983i-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5983i-0-0\">Said limitations might give you a hint to the direction your business should steer to in regards to its how\/where data needs.<\/div>\n<h5 data-offset-key=\"5983i-0-0\">How do we overcome those limitations?<\/h5>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5983i-0-0\">Here\u2019s my advice to sort out those limitations:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"dom4t-0-0\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dom4t-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dom4t-0-0\">Yours might be a traditional, family-run, brick and mortar business that has thriven for ages\u2026 But it stands little to no chances of survival without proper <strong>online sales channel <\/strong>(both web and mobile)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dom4t-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dom4t-2-0\">If you didn\u2019t realize it yet, it means you\u2019ve been too busy to read industry\u2019s reports, or that you\u2019re too stubborn to accept <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dom4t-2-1\">times a-change<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dom4t-3-0\">. Either way, you invest in a booking system to grow (or subsist), or you keep doing things the way you always did. And good riddance.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dom4t-0-0\">It\u2019s never too late (nor too early) to start at least collecting data, from all your IT or manual systems. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bio6-1-0\">But data should <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bio6-2-0\">be collected<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bio6-3-0\"> and stored the proper way, otherwise it could be costly to analyze it later, or to get actionable insights that convert into money<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3bio6-4-0\">. The better you design the whole process, the more profitable will be your dataset. So, once again, consultancy is not optional.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dom4t-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1s1t0-0-0\">I learnt at my own expenses that presenting data for staff consumption is a delicate process. Otherwise, the whole <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/imssc.org\/biflix\/how-to-set-up-a-data-driven-culture-in-hotels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data-driven culture &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/strong> bit is a futile exercise. Guess what? Consultancy is mandatory for this too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Conclusion<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"1s1t0-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-0-0\">Right, you might be arguing that paid third party advice is compulsory on whatever aspect of data-related issues, so profitability <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-1-0\">is reduced<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-2-0\"> or nulled<\/span><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-3-0\">. Not exactly, I\u2019d point out. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-4-0\">You can always try self-service analytics (find <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/imssc.org\/biflix\/beginners-guide-to-self-service-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my article on the matter here &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-6-0\"> )<\/span><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-7-0\">. A guaranteed ROI alternative, to which consulting <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-8-0\">is limited<\/span><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-9-0\"> at set-up phase. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><span data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-10-0\">With it, you and your crew can flight on autopilot, until your company\u2019s growth justifies further investment in data profitableness<\/span><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\" data-offset-key=\"1h6l0-11-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"dvjqu-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"dvjqu-0-0\">If that&#8217;s not enough to convince you yet, perhaps it would be interesting to calculate the cost of <strong>not<\/strong> using your data.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"ccm37-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ccm37-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ccm37-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"99ld9\" data-offset-key=\"dd7on-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dd7on-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dd7on-0-0\">Sounds like a plan?
