Remembering David Butteriss
It is with great sadness that I share the news that Dave Butteriss passed away on Tuesday (Aug 18, 2026).
Dave was a hugely respected and much-loved member of the UK speed skating community, and his contribution to our sport went far beyond simply being a skater or supporter. For generations of skaters, coaches and families, Dave was someone who was there — helping, travelling, fixing, encouraging and giving his time whenever it was needed.
He was a familiar face at rinks and competitions across the UK, the Netherlands, and further afield and was particularly well known within the Fen Skaters community. Dave gave an enormous amount to our sport.
What comes through most strongly from those who knew him, though, is not just what Dave did, but the kind of person he was — selfless, patient, respectful, generous and quietly dependable.
Dave leaves behind an incredible legacy of friendships, memories and, I am sure, countless stories from his many years involved in speed skating.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Pauline, his family and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rest in peace, Dave. You will be very sadly missed by the UK speed skating community.
