World Winter Master Games 2020 – Innsbruck

World Winter Master Games 2020 – Innsbruck Austria

From 10 until 19 January 2020 the World Winter Master Games 2020 (WWMG2020) https://www.innsbruck2020.com/en/innsbruck-2020 were held in Innsbruck Austria. More then 3000 athletes were active in 12 winter sports, amongst these speedskating. Almost 250 masters participated in three days in six distances. On the first day, Thursday 16 January the 500 m and 3000 m were on the program. On Friday 16 January the 1500 and 5000 m were skated and on Saturday 19 January the 1000 and 10.000 meters. A lot of masters skated during these three days 3 or even 4 distances.

The speedskating event was very good organised by the jury team of the Austrian Skating association in Innsbruck. During the first two days the weather was extremely beautiful. On Saturday the weather was changed into light snowfall in the morning and wet snow and light rain in the afternoon.

The event was fantastic and all competitors were very enthusiastic and performed very good. The results of all skaters can be found on this webpage https://www.innsbruck2020.com/de/start-ergebnislisten and a lot of pictures of all sport can be found on https://www.innsbruck2020.com/de/news/fotos.

Very much masters skated very well on the different distances. A large number of unofficial new outdoor master world records were skated. Hans de Vries, the Dutch professor in speedskating statistics supported the jury to make all comparisons.

A superb performance was skated by Eva Riemersma (L35+) on the 10 K on Saturday. She pulverised under difficult ice and weather conditions the 10 K international masters world record of Sandra van Bijlert (18:24,27 min skated on 15-03-2016 in Heerenveen). The unofficial new masters world record on the 10 K L35+ is now 17:43,00 minutes skated on the outdoor rink of Olympiaworld Innsbruck, fantastic!

Furthermore a nice interview with Marianne de Neeling-Lans (L60+) can be found on https://www.innsbruck2020.com/en/news/short-stories/like-daughter-like-mother

WWMG2020 was a true example of top performance of masters in winter sports, not only in speedskating but in all other winter sports! Congratulations for the whole organizing team of WWMG2020!
